Barnett English, the brain behind JTMF, has traversed more than 650 camping music gatherings since 1993 with his organic coffee hub, JavaGogo. JavaGogo stumbled upon the Joshua Tree Lake Campground in October 2002 to serve up fresh drinks at the JT Didgeridoo Festival. Barnett recalls, “I arrived at night, only to wake up to the mesmerizing vistas of the National Park and the Copper Mountains. After meeting our hospitable hosts (Sally & Ken Jayes, owners of JT Lake Campground), I pitched the idea of a music festival. Sally responded, “If you believe in it, go for it.”
The idea took root. Joshua Tree was undeniably stunning, but what about its inhabitants? That very week, a stranger invited Barnett to his birthday bash. Two hundred inspired individuals dancing around a fire. The town was (and still is) inhabited by nature lovers, creative souls, DIY artists, and uniquely extraordinary people. That sealed the deal. Within half a year, Joshua Tree became home. The inaugural JTMF unfolded on April 11-13, 2003.
The Community
JTMF is the brainchild of a close-knit group of friends and enthusiasts united by the belief that music is life’s essence, and art enriches and rescues. By crafting a small, inspired community for a weekend, festival attendees relish rich and profound connections with others, departing reinvigorated (not drained). The experience is heightened amidst nature, surrounded by fellow music aficionados. Over two hundred volunteers and thirty-six team leaders toil tirelessly and passionately to fashion this distinctive and enchanting atmosphere.
Who Attends?
The festivals cater to families, attracting attendees of all ages. The diverse line-ups draw a varied audience of discerning live music aficionados who relish the outdoors. The National Park stands as one of the world’s foremost rock climbing destinations (welcoming 2 million visitors annually). People flock here to climb and dance. Many arrive for the festival and linger for a camping and adventure retreat in the park. The festival is an EXPERIENCE where groups of families and friends convene once or twice yearly to truly connect, celebrate, and bond.
