About ARCTUROS:

ARCTUROS is a non-profit organization that focuses on protecting and managing wildlife and the natural environment. Thanks to the help of dozens of volunteers, ARCTUROS takes actions to achieve its goals. The organization coordinates volunteer exchange programs in collaboration with the General Secretariat for Youth and the European Voluntary Service (EVS). These programs provide young people aged 18-25 the opportunity to work voluntarily for short or long intervals in a foreign country.

The objective of the European Voluntary Service is to provide an informal intercultural learning experience to young people, encourage their social inclusion, active participation and preoccupation, and offer opportunities for expression and solidarity with others. It also aims to support the development of local communities and encourage the establishment of new partnerships and the exchange of experiences and good practices between the sending and hosting bodies of volunteers.

About Volunteer at Animal Shelter and Protect Wildlife Opportunity:

ARCTUROS offers several volunteer opportunities through the EVS program. Volunteers have the unique chance to participate in field actions to preserve wildlife and the natural environment. After attending a one-month intensive Greek language course and a preparatory seminar on basic animal observation methods, they visit areas where bears and wolves live to record their bio-indications and behaviors, always with the guidance and accompaniment of the ARCTUROS scientific team. Volunteers also have the opportunity to:

  • Engage in fieldwork (radio-observation of bears or wolves)
  • Work at the bear and wolf shelter (assisting visitors, feeding and taking care of animals, manual labor, maintenance of paths, etc.)
  • Participate in environmental education activities (with students or groups of children in schools and other educational institutions)
  • Contribute to public awareness campaigns (events and exhibitions) throughout Greece
  • Operate the ARCTUROS Information Centre for the Brown Bear in Nikios School of Nymfaio

The accommodation for volunteers is provided in a traditional house in Aetos, Florina, which can accommodate up to 10 people. Training on issues related to the bear, the wolf, and the mountain regions is also provided by the ARCTUROS staff.
